Carmen Pabón del Amanecer Garden
Community Garden Established 1984
La madrina del
lower east side
Carmen Pabón, 'la madrina del Lower East Side,' was a Puerto Rican community activist, gardener, poet and actress who founded a community garden as an urban sanctuary for children, local artists, Nuyorican poets and the elderly. Carmen helped thousands to create a better life for themselves and fed multitudes of Lower East Siders experiencing homelessness. Today, Carmen’s legacy lives on in this historic community garden of the Lower East Side.
Help US restore the mural
Our garden mural, pictured right, created in 1984 by artist John Pitman Weber is in need of repairs and restoration. Titled, From One Generation to Another, La Lucha Continua, the mural is a one-of-a-kind bas-relief public art piece featuring themes of immigration, Afro-Caribbean culture, and the resilience of a community united.
