The Mural
From one generation to another, la lucha continua
From One Generation to Another La Lucha Continua is a bas-relief mural designed and built by artist John Pitman Weber of the Chicago Mural Group in 1984. Weber’s mural inspired other guerilla-mural projects, helped revitalize the once neglected Lower East Side, and of particular note, protected The Garden from demolition in the 1990s.
Today the mural stands tall and can be viewed when facing south on Avenue C. As the viewer gets closer they will see Taino motifs and poems by Puerto Rican greats like Jose de Diego.

This mural is a one-of-a-kind and represents the hard work and presence of Puerto Rican and Afro Caribbean diaspora in the Lower East Side.

30'x40'
In the 1980s CITYarts (previously, Cityarts Workshop) hired John Pitman Weber to design and construct a mural that would proudly reflect the surrounding environment. The Garden, already occupied by Carmen Pabón, was chosen as the perfect location.
Total Size
Weber utilized two techniques, free-form concrete relief, covered with multi-colored bands of stucco, and sgraffito to build this 30’ x 40’ public art piece.

Weber interviewed for the New York Times, August 1984, about this project. You can see the mural in progress in the foreground.

Fuerzas Irresistibles
Today, Carmen’s legacy is inextricably linked with this iconic mural that saved her sanctuary while she was fighting to save her community.
